The Rise of Horror Depot

Horror Depot began with a simple passion: a lifelong love of all things horror, creepy, strange, mysterious, and monster (specifically Godzilla). 

Founded by Joshua Dahlin, Horror Depot was born from Josh’s desire to connect with the people within the horror community. He met many of the artists, creators, collectors, filmmakers, vendors, and independent businesses whose work often exists outside the mainstream. As Josh became more involved in the horror community, he discovered just how many talented people were creating incredible things without having an easy place to showcase or sell them. 

That realization led to the creation of the original Horror Depot website, which was designed as a place where people could sell underground horror merchandise and share their creations with an audience that could truly appreciate their art. 

The idea was there. The passion was there. But the technology wasn't quite ready. The website experienced constant crashes, and eventually Josh stepped away from the project for a few years to pursue other interests. But the idea behind Horror Depot never really disappeared. 

When Josh returned to the concept, he began looking at the horror community from a different perspective. Over the years, he had met and worked with countless independent creators and small businesses. Some of them were incredibly talented, but they faced a common problem. They couldn't get through the door. 

Many couldn't get accepted into established horror conventions. Others struggled to get into oddity markets, art shows, festivals, or other events where they could actually reach an audience. There were creators with incredible products, artists with unique work, and entrepreneurs with businesses worth discovering, but they simply weren't being given enough opportunities. 

That's when Horror Depot became about something much bigger than a website. 

It became about creating opportunities. 

The idea for the Dark Arts Festival grew from that realization. If talented people couldn't find a place to showcase their work, why not create one? 

The same philosophy helped inspire the Dark Reads event developed by Horror Depot, creating spaces where independent authors, artists, and creators could meet audiences and have their work seen. 

And the mission didn't stop with merchandise and vendors. 

Josh also recognized how difficult it can be for independent filmmakers to get their work in front of a larger audience. Independent films are often competing for attention against productions with enormous budgets, established distribution networks, and major marketing campaigns. Incredible films can easily go unseen simply because they don't have the same access to traditional platforms. 

Horror Depot began hosting independent film screenings to give filmmakers a place to showcase their work, connect with audiences, and reach new viewers. When Scars Magazine began covering the screenings, a natural partnership formed around their shared passion for supporting independent horror. 

That collaboration brought their efforts together, and Sinister Screenings was born; a platform dedicated to giving independent filmmakers the exposure they deserve and helping great films find audiences who might otherwise never discover them. 

Over time, what started as a passion project has continued to evolve into a growing community and platform dedicated to the people who make the horror world so interesting. A community where everyone deserves a place to be seen, heard, and appreciated.  

Horror Depot is about more than horror merchandise. It’s about the people who create, inspire, and embrace the unconventional. From independent artists, filmmakers, authors, vendors, and performers to the differently abled and LGBTQ+ communities, we believe everyone deserves a place to be seen, appreciated, and supported. 

Horror has always celebrated the unusual, the unconventional, and the wonderfully different. Horror Depot embraces that spirit by creating an inclusive space where creators can share their art, celebrate their individuality, and grow their passions. 

And we're not done yet. 

We're proud of where Horror Depot has been, proud of the people we've met along the way, and even more excited about where we're going. 

The future of Horror Depot will continue to grow around the same idea that started it all: create opportunities, build community, and give the weird, wonderful, independent, and overlooked a place to be seen. 

And soon, Horror Depot will once again return to its roots with some killer merchandise of its own. 

Because this was never just about building a website. It was about building a home for the people who didn't always have one.
